Long Lonesome Highway

I took this on November 3, 2007 in the late afternoon. My wife, daughter, and I had spent a good amount of the day out exploring Valley of Fire State Park for the first time. This beautiful park is located a short hour to hour and a half drive North and East of Las Vegas. The park gets its name from the red sandstone that during certain times of the day look like they are on fire. It is a beautiful way to spend the day as long as you go between late fall and early spring. Outside of that time frame you risk exposure to 100°F+ temperatures at the hottest part of the day.

During our return from the northern part of the park I pulled over to grab this shot. Making sure no one was coming from behind I stepped out into the road, steadied myself as best I could, and grabbed three exposures. I took those three exposures and combined them into a HDR, cropped, rotated, and added an B&W filter to give this final result.
